ASHLAND – The Southern Oregon University men's soccer team proved itself against the best of the Cascade Conference during the regular season. To keep their national tournament hopes alive, the Raiders will have to do it again as the No. 5 seed this week at the CCC Championships presented by U.S. Bank.

SOU (12-5-1 overall) will face the team it tied for fourth place, College of Idaho (11-4-2), in Tuesday's 8 p.m. quarterfinal round after both finished 9-3-1 in the CCC regular season. The Yotes are the only team among the top-four in the standings against whom the Raiders didn't earn a result. They'll be matching up in the postseason for the first time since the 2017 quarterfinals, when SOU scored a 1-0 overtime victory en route to its first and only tournament title.

PLAYOFF PICTURE: Monday's quarterfinals and Wednesday semifinals will both be held at Les Schwab Sports Park in Springfield, and the championship will move to Civic Park in Eugene on Friday. The tournament is unbracketed, meaning the highest remaining seed will face the lowest remaining seed in the semis. Warner Pacific owns the top seed and, consequently, the CCC's first automatic bid for the 40-team NAIA Championships Opening Round, which begins on Nov. 17 at campus sites across the country. The second bid goes to the CCC Tournament champion – unless WPU wins the title, in which case it will be awarded to the other finalist. If the Raiders can't secure it, their five-loss record likely leaves them with a miniscule shot at receiving an at-large berth.

SOU VS. COLLEGE OF IDAHO: The Yotes took the regular-season meeting at Raider Stadium, 3-1 on Oct. 15, and stopped a six-game SOU winning streak. Eric Hornung tallied the first and last goals, and Emil Powles converted a penalty kick in the 73rd minute to break a 1-1 tie following a hand-ball in the box. The Yotes became just the second SOU opponent this season to post more shots on goal than the Raiders, posting a 9-6 advantage. The Raiders had won the previous six matchups dating back to 2016, and hadn't given up a goal in the series since 2017. Hornung leads the team with 13 goals, and the Yotes have outscored opponents 48-19.

HOW THEY GOT HERE: The Raiders started the conference slate on a disappointing note, losing back-to-back in Washington at Northwest (1-0) and Evergreen (2-1) – both of which finished the regular season with sub-.500 records – despite logging 15 more shots on goal (23-8) and 16 more corner kicks (17-1) combined in the outings. They've been as hot as anyone since, going 9-1-1 in their last 11 games with a 26-6 aggregate goals advantage. Their run included a 2-2 draw with top seed and No. 19-ranked WPU despite playing a man down for most of the match; a 3-2 triumph at No. 2 seed Oregon Tech after falling behind by two goals in the opening minute; and a 1-0 win at then No. 23-ranked Corban, the No. 3 seed.

SOU TOURNAMENT HISTORY: The Raiders are in the tournament for the sixth consecutive postseason; they've missed it just once, in their inaugural 2015 season. They've still never lost a game in the tournament, but have been eliminated four times in penalty kicks – most recently by Oregon Tech in last year's semifinal round. The team has yet to win a round of PKs. They made their most recent appearance in the championship match in 2018, when Rocky Mountain (Mont.) claimed the title in PKs. A year earlier, they defeated Corban in overtime for the championship.
