ASHLAND – The perfect start to Southern Oregon's dual season ended on tiebreaker criteria against No. 20-ranked Montana State-Northern on Wednesday night at Riehm Arena.

The Lights won, 20-19, only after a rulebook consultation. When SOU's Antonio Garcia tied the score at 19-all by defeating Ryan Moldenhauer 7-2 in the heavyweight match, the teams were also tied in total number of wins by decision, major decision and fall. But because the Lights had a 43-39 advantage in combined points in those decisions and major decisions, they were awarded the deciding point.

The Raiders' record dropped to 5-1, but they had several encouraging moments while building a 16-4 lead through five matches.

MSUN's Tanner Cook opened with a 19-6 major decision over Mitch Warren before No. 2-ranked 133-pounder Evan Potter swung the momentum in SOU's direction with a third-round pin of Cooper Cook. Before finishing him off, Potter had built a 14-0 lead with five minutes of riding time. He stayed unbeaten on the season at 10-0.

Derek Ramos turned in a convincing 8-2 decision against Colin Silverthorn at 141. Then, No. 7 149-pounder Aaron Gandara knocked off No. 6 Martin Wilkie, 5-3, in a battle of NAIA All-Americans. Midway through the third period, he took over with a quick escape and takedown to go up 4-2.

Dylan Straley delivered the Raiders' second straight upset at 157, blanking No. 22 Connor Harris in an 8-0 major decision. After that, though, the Lights won four in a row.

NaKoda Siegel, ranked No. 3 at 174, was in the middle of the key sequence with a 5-3 decision over Alex Hernandez, snatching the lead on a takedown with 35 seconds to go. Austin Vanek then had the win of the night at 184, pinning Kabb Christensen with 34 seconds left after Christensen had built a 6-3 lead. The fall tied the score at 16, and No. 22 Carl Hansen put the Lights in front by defeating Andrew Herrera 5-2 at 197.

The Raiders will be in Reno, Nev., this weekend, facing off with No. 8 Marian (Ind.) on Friday and competing in the Reno Tournament of Champions on Sunday.
