Raiders grind out 60-54 win over Warner Pacific

ASHLAND – Southern Oregon leaned on its defense and generated just enough offense inside to overcome its most impotent 3-point shooting night in 11 years and grind out a 60-54 win over Warner Pacific on Friday at Lithia Motors Pavilion.

K'wan Carter scored 18 and Josh Meyer went for 17 points and 13 rebounds, accounting for a majority of the Raiders' 44 points in the paint as they misfired on 18 of 19 attempts from downtown. They made life equally difficult on the Knights, who shot 36 percent from the field as their five-game winning streak came to an end.

SOU upped its record to 15-12 overall and 12-7 in the Cascade Conference, remaining tied with Corban for third place in the standings.

Trailing 39-38 with less than 10 minutes to play, the Raiders got a welcome spark from freshman guard Jackson Smyth, who knocked down two jumpers – including the team's only 3-pointer of the night – and dished out two assists during a game-changing 13-2 run.

Smyth finished with nine points on 4-of-6 shooting and three assists off the bench. Tez Allen contributed six points, seven assists and two steals, and Atmar Mundu had six points and three assists.

Isaac Etter scored 11 points for the Knights (14-13, 10-9) and banked in a deep 3 with 20 seconds remaining to trim SOU's lead to 56-54.

Mundu then calmly knocked down two free throws to make it a two-possession game, and Carter hit two more to complete SOU's sixth straight home win.

Meyer's double-double was his fourth in five outings. He became the first Raider to register 10 in a season since David Sturner in 2013-14, shooting 8-of-18 from the field.

Carter, who shot 7-of-15, scored in double figures for the fifth consecutive game.

WPU's shooting percentage was the lowest for an SOU opponent in 11 games.

The Raiders will complete their regular-season home schedule at 5 p.m. Saturday against Multnomah, which knocked Oregon Tech out of first place with an 82-80 upset Friday in Klamath Falls.
