LINCOLN, Calif. – The fifth-ranked Southern Oregon softball team rallied to earn a split against William Jessup (Calif.) on Friday at Foskett Regional Field, defeating the Warriors 7-4 in the nightcap after losing Game 1 by the same score.
Trailing 3-2 in the sixth inning of Game 2, the Raiders (4-2) used three hits, a walk and an error to flip the lead with four runs.
Kelly Ann McKeown's misplayed grounder brought home
Lauren Weinberg for the tying run, and
Sarah Kerling delivered the big blow with a two-RBI single before being driven in by
Deja Acosta.
Weinberg, who went 3-for-4, added another RBI with a bunt single in the seventh. Kerling went 2-for-4 with two runs and two RBIs, helping to end WJU's season-opening seven-game winning streak.
Cayla Williams earned the decision by allowing just one run on four hits over 4 2/3 innings of relief work in her Raider debut. She struck out six and walked one.
Maddy Ybarra won Game 1 for the Warriors with a three-run, walk-off home run in the bottom of the seventh. The shot spoiled another SOU rally: down 4-2 in the fifth, the Raiders had tied the game thanks to
Riley Donovan's run-scoring single and Weinberg's RBI groundout.
Acosta, Donovan and Kailey Fulton tallied two hits apiece in the loss.
Mayze Menefee pitched two innings of scoreless relief.
The Raiders will play two more Saturday at Menlo (Calif.) with first pitch set for noon.
