Machado, Menefee blank Menlo in sweep

ATHERTON, Calif. Katie Machado and Mayze Menefee twirled back-to-back shutouts as No. 5 Southern Oregon swept Menlo (Calif.) on Saturday afternoon, winning 8-0 in six innings and 2-0 at Wunderlich Field.

Machado improved to 3-0 in the opener, scattering five singles with four strikeouts and three walks. It was the sophomore's second shutout of the young season.

Menefee, a freshman, went to 2-0 by tossing a two-hitter. She retired the first eight Oaks she saw and, after surrendering a single, set down 12 more in a row into the seventh. She finished with four strikeouts and no walks.

The Raiders improved to 6-2 overall. Menlo dropped to 1-5.

Riley Donovan supplied the offense in Game 1 with two doubles, three RBIs and a run scored. Sarah Kerling reached base three times, scored twice and drove in a run. Rylan Austin, Kailer Fulton, Phelicity Fa'aita and Lauren Weinberg added an RBI apiece as the Raiders padded a 1-0 lead with three runs in the fifth and four more in the sixth.

Kerling was the offensive hero in Game 2, breaking a scoreless tie with a two-run single to center field in the fourth inning. Jordan Henderson and Piper Love set up the rally with back-to-back hits to start the frame.

Austin, Kerling and Love had two hits apiece.

The Raiders will be back in action next Friday at Hope International (Calif.).
