Allison steps up as No. 23 SOU fights off Owls

ASHLAND – In desperate need of offense, No. 23-ranked Southern Oregon got it from an unlikely source in defensive sparkplug Danasia Allison to turn its fortunes around Tuesday night against Oregon Tech.

Allison, a 5-foot-5 senior guard, dropped in a career-high 23 points while knocking down 6-of-7 attempts from 3-point distance in driving the Raiders to a 62-55 rivalry win at Lithia Motors Pavilion. The Richmond, Calif., product – perennially among the Cascade Conference's leader in steals – had only scored in double figures three times and never more than 16 points in her 104 previous outings for SOU, but stepped up time and again to make her team 15-5 overall and 11-3 in the CCC.

Allison hit all five of her 3-point tries in the first half – she'd never before made more than two in a game – and converted a three-point play to get the Raiders out of a 10-point hole.

She stepped up even bigger late. With the Raiders trailing 53-52 and 2:38 to play, she calmly knocked down a 3-pointer from the corner. Moments later, after Clara Robbins grabbed a defensive rebound, Brianna Phiakhamngon found Allison streaking down the floor for a layup that put SOU up 57-53.

The Owls, who entered the night a game back of the third-place Raiders in the standings, dipped to 13-7 overall and 9-5 in the conference. A five-minute scoring drought in the fourth quarter didn't help their cause.

SOU outscored them 33-20 in the second half. Sophomore guard Olivia Sprague, the CCC's leading scorer, recorded 15 points but was held to 1-of-7 shooting in the fourth.

SOU's Kalei Iwami added nine points, hitting a 3-pointer that briefly put the Raiders ahead with a few minutes remaining and connecting on three key free throws in the final 34 seconds to put the game away. Kami Walk finished with 13 points, six rebounds, three assists and two steals.

The Raiders swept the regular-season series for the second consecutive season. They survived despite a 36-percent shooting night, their sixth win this season with a sub-40 performance.

They'll complete their five-game homestand this weekend, hosting Warner Pacific at 5:30 p.m. Friday and Multnomah at 3 p.m. Saturday.
