ASHLAND – A day after securing the Cascade Conference title, No. 25-ranked Southern Oregon had plenty left in the tank to cruise to its eighth consecutive victory, 4-2 against Northwest (Wash.) on Monday afternoon at Raider Stadium.
Adrian Villegas and
Alan Gaytan pushed SOU (15-2-0 overall, 11-1-0 CCC) to a 3-0 lead in the first half and
Kevin Nevinger contributed an insurance goal in the second. The Raiders have won all six of their home games and scored at least three goals in each of them heading into Thursday's regular-season finale against Corban.
Villegas, who scored twice on free kicks in Sunday's clincher against Northwest (Wash.), put the Raiders up for good by converting a penalty kick in the 24th minute – bringing his SOU single-season goals record total to 12.
Gaytan kicked a loose ball off the crossbar and in during the 41st minute, and 50 seconds later Villegas hooked him up on a breakaway for his fifth goal of the season. He nearly completed a hat trick two minutes after that with a header that went off the post.
Gaytan and Villegas ended the day tied atop SOU's career goals list with 32 apiece. Villegas' assist gave him 11 on the year, matching his own Raider single-season record.
Nevinger had the flashiest goal of the day, breaking up Northwest forward Tyler Hopp's 10th and 11th goals of the season in the 87th minute. After taking an assist from
Mustafa Daggig, he crossed up the keeper and shot into an open net.
The Raiders posted 19 total shots, seven of which went on goal.
In conference play, they've outscored opponents 34-5 combined.
