HELENA, Mont. – No. 5-ranked Carroll (Mont.) nearly became Southern Oregon's second upset victim in as many days but broke a last-minute tie with four straight free throws to win 60-56 on Saturday in the Saints' Thanksgiving Classic.
After beating No. 18 Providence (Mont.) by 16 points on Friday, the Raiders (3-1 overall) tied the Saints (5-2) at 56 on a 6-0 run that started with an
Emma Schmerbach jumper and ended with a
Clara Robbins bucket at the 1:23 mark.
The Raiders then got a defensive stop but couldn't come up with the go-ahead basket, and Maddie Geritz drew a foul with 43 seconds left rebounding their missed attempt. Geritz hit two free throws for the lead, and after another empty SOU possession Willa Albrecht hit two more.
Albrecht, a transfer guard from University of Montana, scored 22 points and shot 3-of-3 from the 3-point line. Jamie Pickens, the Saints' All-American forward, had 14 points, 14 rebounds and five blocked shots.
Kami Walk led the Raiders with 15 points, adding five rebounds, three assists and two steals. Point guard
Meghan McIntyre registered 14 points, eight rebounds and four steals, and Schmerbach scored 10.
The lead changed hands 12 times, all in the first three quarters. The Raiders made their run despite shooting 2-of-14 in the fourth.
They start Cascade Conference play next week at Lithia Motors Pavilion, hosting College of Idaho at 5:30 p.m. Friday and No. 17 Eastern Oregon at 3 p.m. Saturday.
