Noah Talavera and 174-pounder
Alex Hernandez both came up one win short of placing, and
John White made an appearance in the 184 quarterfinals Sunday at the Reno Tournament of Champions.
Hernandez, ranked No. 8 in the NAIA at 174, notched five wins on the day and advanced through four consecutive elimination rounds. In the last of those, he led Wyoming's Riley Davis 7-5 when Davis was disqualified for violation of medical protocol. Hernandez had to forfeit his subsequent consolation semifinal.
Talavera went 4-2 with three consolation victories but was stopped short in the same round by Grand View (Iowa)'s Jack Ervien. White opened with wins by fall and major decision before dropping his next two matches.
Dylan Straley (157 pounds) added three consolation wins.
Jonathan Hernandez (149) and
Kabb Christensen (197) had two apiece.
SOU, which brought 17 wrestlers to the tournament, finished 13th in the team standings. Oklahoma, Wyoming and Grand View made up the top three.
The Raiders next compete Jan. 5-6 at the NWCA National Dual Meet Championships in Cedar Falls, Iowa. The trip was just added to their schedule this week.
