SALEM – The Corban men's wrestling team took advantage of a shorthanded Southern Oregon lineup to score its first ever dual win in the series Saturday, 26-10 at the C.E. Jeffers Center.
The Warriors (2-1 overall) won the first two matches by five points combined, but ran away with five of the last six to finish off the upset of the No. 19-ranked Raiders (1-1).
Evan Potter, SOU's top-ranked 141-pounder, protected his standing with a 9-1 major decision over Luke Jensen.
Alex Hernandez, ranked No. 10 at 174, did the same in a 7-1 decision over Matthew Bartlett, and
Travis Thorpe (149) eked out the Raiders' other win, 9-8 against Bo Davis.
The Warriors opened with a 3-0 win from No. 9 Brayden Boyd against
Vonn Fenn at 125 pounds, then scored an upset at 133 as Blake Runion topped No. 19
Simon Graeber 15-13. After Potter and Thorpe gave the Raiders their first and only lead, David Rubio (157) won by technical fall and Jesse Rubio (165) by decision to make it 14-7.
The outcome was finalized at 197 pounds by Isaiah Twait, who pinned
Kabb Christensen in the second round to give Corban a 13-point advantage.
SOU, which was without No. 12
Aaron Gandara (157) and No. 16
Andrew Herrera (197), wrestles again Sunday at the Clackamas Open.
