ASHLAND – A 14-2 tiebreaking run that started in the third quarter and spilled into the fourth kept Oregon Tech unbeaten and resulted in No. 20-ranked Southern Oregon's first Cascade Conference loss, 69-58 on Wednesday evening at Lithia Motors Pavilion.
Gabbie Gascon scored a career-high 22 points for the Owls (11-0 overall, 5-0 CCC), who never trailed while snapping a six-game series losing streak against the Raiders (8-3, 4-1) and taking sole possession of first place. The win was their first at SOU since the 2017-18 season.
It spoiled
Meghan McIntyre's 25-point, seven-steal night for the Raiders. After they trailed 50-38 early in the fourth, she and
Kami Walk combined for 19 points the rest of the way and teamed up to cut the deficit to five halfway through the period. They got no closer, and the Owls sank 9-of-10 free throws in the final minute to seal the outcome.
Olivia Sprague and Alexis Elquist complemented Gascon with 13 points apiece, and Tatum Schmerbach contributed six points, nine rebounds and three assists. The Owls scored 15 more points than any other CCC team against SOU this season by amassing 18 at the free-throw line and 18 more in transition.
The Raiders were haunted by 17 turnovers and a 2-of-16 mark from 3-point range. They shot 31 percent overall from the field overall.
Walk finished with 15 points, five steals and five rebounds,
Makayla Scurlock collected four steals and
Izzy Hernandez had nine points and eight rebounds off the bench.
SOU has a 15-day holiday break before returning to action Jan. 5-6 at home against Multnomah and Warner Pacific.
