ASHLAND –
Cayla Williams and
Katie Machado pitched back-to-back complete games and No. 10-ranked Southern Oregon opened the season with a 4-3, 9-4 sweep of Vanguard (Calif.) on Friday at University Field.
In her Game 1 start, Williams struck out four while limiting the Lions to four hits and two earned runs. She also led the Raiders with three hits on the day, lining RBI singles in both ends of the doubleheader and a two-run double in Game 2.
Machado shut the Lions out until Carli Row's sixth-inning grand slam in Game 2. By then, the Raiders had already built a 7-0 lead as
Deja Acosta and
Sammie Pemberton tallied two hits and two runs scored apiece, and
Hannah Clavelle blasted a towering solo home run in her SOU debut.
Machado struck out six, walked two and allowed six hits in her 124-pitch effort.
Acosta, who reached base five times on the day, put the Raiders in front with a bases-loaded walk in Game 1, and the first of three Lions errors helped them go up 2-0 in the third inning. Williams and
Kailer Fulton went on to drive in runs with singles.
The Raiders totaled six extra-base hits in Game 2, getting two doubles from Pemberton and a triple from Acosta.
Lindsey Stripling's RBI triple highlighted a four-run first inning.
Brianna Williams and Emmy Anderson took the losses for the Lions, who were also debuting after receiving votes in the preseason NAIA Top 25 poll.
The teams will square off again with a doubleheader in Costa Mesa, Calif., next Thursday.
