JAMESTOWN, N.D. – The Southern Oregon University women's wrestling team is in win-now mode with nine seniors and as many former All-Americans in tow, giving the program its best national title shot yet at this week's NAIA Championships.
Competition begins at 8 a.m. Pacific Time on Friday and will continue at the same time Saturday inside University of Jamestown's Newman Arena. This year, for the first time, women's wrestling has "Championship" as opposed to "Invitational" status in the NAIA – meaning individuals had to qualify through their conference tournaments, and the top-eight placers in each weight class will be considered All-Americans.
The Raiders owned the NAIA's No. 1 ranking until late January and will enter the tournament at No. 3, a touch behind No. 1 Life (Ga.) and No. 2 Grand View (Iowa) in the points standings.
They posted a program-best second-place finish at last year's NAIA Invitational, but this season has been more successful in every measure leading up to the tournament. The Raiders went 8-0 through their dual schedule, won the NWCA National Duals title and their first Cascade Conference championship.
They enter with six top-three seeds. Their only No. 1 seed, sophomore 123-pounder
Carolina Moreno, will attempt to become the team's first two-time NAIA champion.
