REDDING, Calif. – Seven minutes into her first collegiate shift, freshman
Iniana Hammond made a game-deciding impact for the Southern Oregon women's soccer team.
Hammond, an Ashland High product, came on as a reserve and scored in the 33rd minute of the Raiders' 1-0, season-opening victory against Simpson (Calif.) on Sunday afternoon.
Sophomore
Lucia Finney checked in with Hammond and got the assist after splitting a pair of defenders to work into the right side of the box. Her pass found Hammond lined up with the left post in space for a shot she guided in with her left foot.
The Raiders had several chances to open up the advantage, but Redhawks keeper Kiah Gridley nixed them with 11 saves.
SOU keeper
Ashlynn Hernandez kept Simpson off the board with four saves of her own. The Redhawks totaled just seven shots, falling to 1-1 on the season.
Hernandez's shutout was her 14th in 20 career starts.
The game was originally scheduled to be played at Raider Stadium, but poor air quality moved it out of the Rogue Valley. The Raiders will also play their next seven games away from home, starting with a trip to Caldwell, Idaho, for neutral-site games against Jessup (Calif.) on Tuesday and Embry-Riddle (Ariz.) on Thursday.
