SOU stumbles at Northwest

KIRKLAND, Wash. – The No. 16-ranked Southern Oregon volleyball team became Northwest (Wash.)'s latest upset victim Friday night at Brodin Pavilion, falling 16-25, 25-23, 25-21, 25-18 in a Cascade Conference match.

The Eagles (10-5 overall, 7-3 CCC), who two weeks ago upset then-No. 1 Eastern Oregon in the same building, took over during the final three sets, where they attacked at a .295 average and nudged the Raiders (14-4, 7-3) to a .132 clip.

NU's Delaney Sparks and Karste Wright propelled a balanced attack with 12 kills apiece, and Kaitlyn Mickle had 11. Wright, who hit .364, also assisted five of the Eagles' 11 blocks and Kalli Budge was in on seven.

Junior right-side hitter Hannah Stadstad was one off a career high with 15 kills for the Raiders, taking just 23 swings to get there. She was perfect on five attempts as they ran away with the first frame.

SOU was up 21-20 in the second, too, and the teams were tied at three points after that. Knotted at 23-23, Budge put the Eagles ahead with a kill before she and Sparks joined forces for a block that evened the match.

Tied 18-18 in the third set, the Eagles separated themselves with four straight points. In the runaway fourth, Savannah Hale served up four of her six aces.

Sadie Byrd added seven kills on a .462 average and four blocks for the Raiders. Carol Melo, Megan Perry and Tessa Zimmerman assisted five blocks apiece.

In fourth place, the Raiders now stand one loss behind College of Idaho and two behind co-leaders Corban and Eastern Oregon. They visit Evergreen (Wash.) at 5 p.m. Saturday.
