COLLEGE PLACE, Wash. – Trailing by six points near the midway point of the second half, the Southern Oregon men's basketball team pieced together a 13-2 run to seize control for good in a 94-85 win against Walla Walla (Wash.) late Saturday night at Windemuth Court.
Teron Bradford amassed 16 points and six rebounds for the Raiders, who went to 9-6 overall and 7-2 in the Cascade Conference. The junior point guard scored 10 down the stretch – hitting one 3-pointer that tied the teams at 62 at the 10-minute mark, and another that stretched SOU's lead to nine points with 2:34 left to play. He finished 4-of-6 from the field and 3-of-4 from 3.
Brett Hollins, in his first full weekend back from an eight-week injury, pitched in 15 points, eight rebounds and three assists. Two more starters,
Casson Rouse (13 points) and
Jordan Veening (11), joined him and Bradford in double figures.
But the Raiders shot 50 percent from the field thanks in large part to their bench, which combined to hit on 12-of-19 attempts.
Mason Whittaker led the unit with 13 points, and
Cole McAninch had nine points and four assists.
Clinging to a two-point edge with 5:34 left, McAninch found Whittaker for a 3, the Raiders got a defensive stop, and Whittaker went inside for a layup that made it 81-74.
SOU overcame a 26-point outing for Ethan Ford, who helped the Wolves (7-9, 2-8) close the first half with an 18-7 spurt to go up three points.
The Raiders improved to 3-1 in CCC road games. They return home next week to match up with Corban on Friday and Bushnell on Saturday, which are both a game behind them in the standings.
