ASHLAND – Two clutch defensive stands sealed the Southern Oregon men's basketball team's 68-65 win over Corban in Cascade Conference play Friday night at Lithia Motors Pavilion.
The Raiders (10-6 overall, 8-2 CCC) never trailed, but an early 14-point lead was all gone when Warriors forward Jay Wilson scored inside with 3:37 left.
Ethan Blythe untied the game moments later with a corner 3-pointer, and following a defensive stop
Brett Hollins hit another one to make it 67-61 at the two-minute mark.
Hollins, who finished with 10 points, five rebounds, three steals and two key blocks, also figured into the last-minute drama. The Warriors (9-6, 6-4) – who entered the matchup a game behind SOU in the standings – had possession trailing by three with 20 seconds left, when
Khalil Chatman stepped in front of Wilson to draw a charge. They got a second chance to tie following a missed free throw on the other end, but Hollins initially batted the ball away from Aundree Polk before forcing him to fade away on a deep attempt, which went around and out as the buzzer sounded.
Casson Rouse scored a team-high 17 points for the Raiders, and
Dominic McGarvey registered 11 points and seven boards.
Cole McAninch kept them afloat offensively amid Corban's second-half rally, finishing with nine points on 4-of-5 accuracy off the bench.
Polk and Wilson led the Warriors with 21 points and 20 respectively. That pair and Taylor Anderson (11 points) combined for 32 after halftime.
Four of the last five meetings between SOU and Corban have been within three points at the end of regulation.
The Raiders are home again at 5 p.m. Saturday against Bushnell, which was a 112-98 loser Friday at Oregon Tech.
