Veening, Rouse push SOU past Beacons

ASHLAND Casson Rouse and Jordan Veening scored 20 points apiece, combining for 27 in the second half in driving Southern Oregon to a 77-72 win against Bushnell on Saturday evening at Lithia Motors Pavilion.

Veening, a senior forward appearing in his sixth game, accounted for 12 consecutive SOU points in the final five minutes to reach his career-high total, finishing 7-of-11 from the field with two blocked shots. Rouse went 7-of-14, hauled in six rebounds and distributed three assists. The Raiders never trailed after his two free throws put them up a point with 7:57 left, marking the final lead change in a game that saw 17 of them.

The Raiders went to 11-6 overall and 9-2 at the halfway point of Cascade Conference play. Seven of their CCC games have been within four points in the final four minutes; they've won six of those.

Clinging to a 70-68 lead with 49 seconds left, Veening rebounded his own miss, put it back and drew a foul for a three-point play. After a defensive stop, he went on to hit three of his next four free-throw attempts.

Teron Bradford chipped in nine points on 3-of-6 shooting from 3, six assists and no turnovers. Khalil Chatman scored eight and collected four boards.

The Beacons (9-8, 6-5) were led by Spencer Hoffman's 21 points and nine rebounds. Kaden Sand went for 12 points, 10 boards and five assists, and Cory Johnson shot 4-of-5 from 3 off the bench.

The Raiders play their next five games on the road, starting with seventh-place Eastern Oregon on Friday and No. 3-ranked College of Idaho on Saturday. They'll seek regular-season sweeps of both squads.
