LA GRANDE – Garrett Hawkes scored 21 points and took over in the second half to lead Eastern Oregon to a 69-58 win against Southern Oregon in Cascade Conference play Friday night at Quinn Coliseum.
Hawkes, a sophomore wing and the Mountaineers' leading scorer whom SOU held to two points in the teams' first meeting, scored 11 straight for EOU to start the second after the Raiders had taken a 36-35 lead. He totaled 16 and two assists in the period while shooting 4-of-6 from 3.
By salvaging a regular-season split of the series and winning their fourth consecutive game, the Mountaineers improved to 8-11 overall and 7-6 in the CCC. The Raiders, still in third place, dipped to 11-7 and 9-3 ahead of Saturday's visit to No. 3-ranked College of Idaho.
Dominic McGarvey led the Raiders with 12 points, and
Mason Whittaker scored all 11 of his before halftime by hitting 3-of-4 3-point attempts.
Hawkes' spurt started an 18-8 EOU run that proved to be the difference.
Casson Rouse, who scored 10, cut the Mountaineers' advantage to 55-52 with 7:35 left before Hawkes came right back with a triple. They never led by fewer than six the rest of the way.
The Mountaineers shot 51 percent from the field and held SOU to a 40-percent clip. In the Raiders' 61-57 triumph against EOU on Dec. 2, they survived 34-percent shooting, their lowest mark in a winning effort over the last five years.
