ASHLAND – The No. 5-ranked Southern Oregon women's wrestling team's starters went 2-0 and its backups scored a major upset in split-squad dual action against Vanguard (Calif.) and Simon Fraser (B.C.) on Sunday at Bob Riehm Arena.

The Raiders' top lineup won 42-4 against Vanguard, the No. 9 team in the NAIA, and 28-14 against Simon Fraser, the No. 7 team in the NCAA. Their 'B' team defeated Vanguard's starters, 25-23, after losing 28-15 against Simon Fraser.

The 'A' team didn't drop a single match against the Lions, getting pins from Marissa Kurtz (116), Bella Amaro (143) and Shenita Lawson (170), and technical falls from Emma Baertlein (109) and Carolina Moreno (130). Karly Scott (101) and Desinee Lopez (136) both defeated higher-ranked opponents – Scott by 4-3 decision over No. 8 Abbeygael Cabuag and Lopez by 5-5 decision in tiebreaker criteria over No. 8 Piper Hall.

Against Simon Fraser, Moreno and Amaro won by fall and Baertlein, Davis and Lawson scored technical falls.

Lia Ferreira (101) set the tone in the 'B' team's win over Vanguard by upsetting Cabuag, 10-3. Kaylee Annis (116) and Candice Corralejo (143) added pins, and the difference was ultimately forfeit wins for Quiliaztli Miguel-Lapham (155) and Sophia Yurkovich (191). Liv Villanueva (116) and Yurkovich (170) won by fall in the Simon Fraser dual.

The Raiders compete next Saturday at the Indiana Tech Open.
