SOU steals 1st regular-season win at EOU in 15 years, 65-63

LA GRANDE – A tiebreaking bucket from Meghan McIntyre with 4.4 seconds left gave the No. 24-ranked Southern Oregon women's basketball team its first regular-season win at Eastern Oregon since 2009, a critical 65-63 decision Friday evening inside Quinn Coliseum.

Shortly before it ended, the Mountaineers' streak appeared to take on mystical qualities when Brie Holecek's desperation 3-pointer at the end of the shot clock struck the backboard, rolled around the basket and dropped in to tie the game with 34 seconds remaining.

But the Raiders had the final answer in a game that featured 20 lead changes. On their ensuing possession, McIntyre fed Kami Walk in the post, cut to the basket from the top perimeter and put in a reverse layup after receiving Walk's bounce pass in stride. On the other end, Holecek's last chance inside – a turnaround jumper from the right block – rimmed off as the buzzer sounded.

The win made the third-place Raiders 14-4 overall and 10-2 in the Cascade Conference, putting them three games in front of the fourth-place Mountaineers (12-5, 8-5). They swept the regular-season series for the first time since the 2008-09 season, though the second meeting was nothing like their 68-42 romp on Dec. 2 in Ashland.

It had been a one-possession game for 23 consecutive game minutes until SOU's Izzy Hernandez ran off a personal 9-0 run in the fourth quarter. Following a corner 3 and a three-point play, she delivered on a third straight possession with a 3 from the wing to make it 61-52 with 6:33 remaining.

Hernandez scored a career-high 12 points on 4-of-6 shooting, also tallying five rebounds and two steals. Walk finished with 15 points, and Mallory Williams came off the bench to score 10.

Holecek, the reigning CCC Player of the Week, brought the Mountaineers back after Hernandez's surge with nine of their final 11 points. She finished with 30, and at 12-of-13 from the line attempted three more free throws than SOU's entire team.

EOU had won five games in a row and eight of its last nine entering the night. Walk and Clara Robbins were largely responsible for limiting the Mountaineers' All-America forward, Beverly Slater, to six points on 2-of-6 shooting.

The Raiders remain one loss behind CCC leaders Lewis-Clark State (12-1) and Oregon Tech (11-1). They play 2 p.m. Saturday at College of Idaho, which stands in sixth place at 5-8.
