BILLINGS, Mont. –
Evan Norconk delivered in the 65th minute as the No. 24-ranked Southern Oregon men's soccer team escaped Rocky Mountain (Mont.) with its third straight one-goal victory, 2-1 on Friday afternoon at Wendy's Field.
Franco Fasoli had the other goal for the Raiders (9-2-1 overall), who remained unbeaten in Cascade Conference play at 6-0-1. They took over first place thanks to College of Idaho's late-comeback win over Carroll (Mont.), which started the day at 6-0.
The Battlin' Bears sunk to 4-5-0 and 3-3-0, falling to SOU for the fourth year in a row.
Norconk, a senior forward, came off the bench to score his 22nd career goal and move up to No. 3 on SOU's all-time goals list. In a 1-1 game,
Kaito Nakayama initiated a counter-attack that saw
Alex Hjulmand lead Norconk into the box for a contested shot. He slipped on an initial blocked attempt, then quickly rose to his feet and took another from 10 yards deep that went past a drawn-out keeper.
The game-winner was Norconk's eighth in his time with the Raiders.
Franco Fasoli's fifth goal of the fall gave them the initial lead in the 20th minute, charging in full speed to get to a loose ball atop the box and rocket it into home. In the 35th, Rocky leveled the score on a set piece as Luke Tooze took a free kick that found an unguarded Espoir Mayele for a header from up close. Mayele appeared to be offside on the play, but SOU protested to no avail.
The Bears put four more shots on goal, all stopped by reigning NAIA Defensive Player of the Week
Casey Ruvolo. The junior keeper made three saves in the second half.
The Raiders have a day off before visiting 12th-place Walla Walla (Wash.) at 1 p.m. Sunday.
