LA GRANDE – Southern Oregon survived without
Megan Perry last month in its first upset of Eastern Oregon. Every bit of the senior right-side hitter's career night was necessary to pull off a second on Friday.
Perry dazzled with 24 loud kills on 34 wings and six blocks as the No. 5-ranked Raiders ended the No. 3 Mountaineers' home winning streak at 26 matches, claiming a 24-26, 25-17, 26-28, 25-22, 15-11 decision that left a near-capacity homecoming crowd at Quinn Coliseum in stunned silence.
The Raiders (18-1 overall, 12-1 Cascade Conference) last won at EOU (18-2, 10-2) in 2018 and '19, not coincidentally the years of their last CCC titles. The Mountaineers have won at least a share of five of the last six championships, including each of the last two.
They've solved everyone this season except SOU, which now stands tied in first place with Corban. The Mountaineers entered the matchup with a league-best .105 opponents' attacking average in CCC matches before watching the Raiders hit .291. It was the highest clip for any EOU opponent since 2021.
Perry, whose final average was a startling .647, was the culprit. She had several accomplices:
Marin Mackey went for 19 kills on 43 attempts with nine digs;
Hannah Stadstad had 14 kills on 36 attempts with only two errors and five blocks; and
Linda Conceicao dropped in seven kills without an error on 12 attempts in addition to seven blocks.
The Raiders lost leads of 21-18 and 24-23 in the first set before cruising through the second behind seven Mackey kills. They had a 23-20 edge in the third and let that slip away, too, but never trailed in the fourth after breaking an 11-11 tie with four straight points.
The tiebreaker was bookended by Perry kills in an apt completion of her takeover. She had five in the frame and assisted a block. With the score level at 9-9, she and Stadstad went back-to-back to give the Raiders the lead for good. Up 12-10 following another Perry smash,
Mylena Testoni's serve grazed the net and dropped down for an ace, which Perry chased with two more kills.
Perry, who missed the first EOU matchup due to injury, upped her CCC-best attacking average to .404. It ranks sixth in the NAIA, and no other player in the circuit is closer than .355. Over her last five matches, she's combined for 65 kills compared to six errors.
The defense got an additional lift from
Sadie Byrd, who totaled seven blocks.
Mylena Testoni and
Kayla Neidigh combined for 31 digs, and the latter added four service aces.
Vitoria Mattos (37 assists) and
Annie Hite (25 assists) ran the team's most impressive offense of the year.
Ashton Bales had 18 kills to lead the Mountaineers, who over the last 14 years have only been swept one other time in the regular-season series by SOU, in 2018.
