KLAMATH FALLS – On an afternoon when Southern Oregon couldn't find a goal,
Casey Ruvolo's clutch play ensured that the No. 25-ranked Raiders at least took home a point from a 0-0 draw with Oregon Tech on Friday at OIT Soccer Field.
Twenty seconds remained when a perfect through-ball to midfield set up OIT's Dalton Rideout for a breakaway, one-on-one opportunity against the SOU keeper. With the closest defender a few strides behind him, Rideout took a shot from the top of the box as Ruvolo waited, slid to his left and sent the ball away.
The Raiders (11-3-2 overall, 8-1-2 Cascade Conference) avoided more trouble a few minutes earlier, when OIT forward Lennyn Solis's centered free kick struck off the left post. The Owls had an 11-5 advantage in total shots; Ruvolo, the reigning CCC Defensive Player of the Year, made four saves to keep the sheet clean.
The result dropped SOU out of first place on the table – two points behind Carroll (Mont.), which won Friday at Northwest (Wash.). Both teams have two regular-season games remaining against teams outside of the playoff picture.
The Owls (7-6-3, 4-4-3) are currently clinging to the eighth and final CCC Tournament spot. The result was just their third in 12 all-time matchups with SOU.
The Raiders' final tune-ups for postseason play are next week in Washington, Friday at Northwest and Saturday at Evergreen.
