KLAMATH FALLS – Oregon Tech flipped an early deficit with three unanswered goals in a 3-1 win over Southern Oregon on Friday at OIT Soccer Field, becoming the second team to clinch a Cascade Conference Tournament berth.
Frida Vargas's third goal of the season gave the Raiders (7-6-1 overall, 4-5-1 CCC) the initial lead in the seventh minute. Off a
Cora Thorndike corner kick,
Taytum Curtis took an initial attempt that Owls keeper Sydni Nakamura got a hand on before Vargas got to the loose ball and put it home.
The Owls (11-4-1, 7-3-0) equalized by the 14th minute, when Shalynai Naputi crossed from the end line to set up a Kayla Ness touch in front of the goal, and they were ahead by the 24th, when Brianna Lewis sent a looping pass from outside of the box to the far post for a Solei Ellotson strike.
Naputi scored eight minutes into the second-half for a two-goal lead. SOU was unable to rally despite a 7-2 edge in shots during the period.
The Owls were limited to four shots on goal but made the most of them. They remained in second place behind College of Idaho, which has already clinched the CCC regular-season championship.
The Raiders are tied for seventh place with one week left in the regular season. They play next Friday at Northwest (Wash.) and Saturday at Evergreen (Wash.).
