Review stings Raiders in tiebreaker at Corban

SALEM – Replay review was unkind to No. 5-ranked Southern Oregon in a tantalizing 25-22, 25-20, 15-25, 18-25, 18-16 Cascade Conference loss to No. 9 Corban on Saturday night at the C.E. Jeffers Center.

The Raiders (21-3 overall, 15-3 CCC), after erasing a 2-0 sets deficit, briefly celebrated what appeared to be a successful match-point in the tiebreaker. Up 14-12, they watched as Corban middle Allyson Reid's attack flew several feet past the end line. The error appeared to seal the deal, but a Warriors challenge of the call was successful when officials ruled that a Raider defender touched the net.

SOU had three more chances at match point and couldn't convert. Tied 16-all, back-to-back kills from Kendra Bittle and Jadah Schmidtke gave Corban (19-4, 15-3) the dramatic victory.

The result left SOU and Corban tied for second place behind Eastern Oregon, which is a match up in the loss column at 15-2 with two weeks left in the regular season.

SOU's right-side hitters, Megan Perry (16 kills) and Hannah Stadstad (15 kills), had big nights in the loss. So did Sadie Byrd (11 kills, 5 blocks) and Mylena Testoni (11 kills, 15 digs, 2 aces), but it wasn't enough to overcome a slow start and Corban's 14-7 edge in blocks.

Reid led the charge with eight kills on 15 swings and seven blocks. Four Warriors reached double figures in kills – Emma Bischoff (14), Makayla Roginski (13), Bittle (12) and Schmidtke (10) – as part of a balanced attack. They hit .382 as a team in the first set, then had a .235 to .091 advantage in the second.

The Raiders were attempting to overcome a 2-0 deficit on the road for the first time since 2019. They dropped both of their matches against Corban in five sets this season and served for match points in each of them.

SOU has its final regular-season homestand next week, facing Multnomah at 6 p.m. Friday and Warner Pacific at 4 p.m. Saturday.
