ASHLAND – A flicker of individual brilliance was the difference in Eastern Oregon's 1-0 win against the Southern Oregon women's soccer team on Friday at Raider Stadium.
Kaydence Martinez scored her first goal of the season in the 79th minute of a scoreless Cascade Conference stalemate to give the Mountaineers the upper hand. It brought their record to 3-3-2 overall and 2-2 in the CCC while dropping SOU to 6-3- and 3-2.
Raiders goalkeeper
Ashlynn Hernandez stopped the first six shots she faced before the decisive strike. The sequence started near the sideline with Ashley Smith, who released the ball from pressure with a towering pass to the center of the field. Martinez won it from a defender, turned and took two touches to her left before directing a perfect 20-yard dart to the far post that slotted inches under the crossbar.
The Raiders, after being limited to three shots in the fist half, were the clear aggressors early in the second with six attempts and a pair of corner kicks in the first 10 minutes of the period. One of those, a header from
Carter O'Shea, bounced off the crossbar and away from trouble.
EOU keeper Madeline Barker earned the shutout with four saves.
The Raiders have averaged over three goals in their six wins but have managed one in their three losses combined.
To salvage the weekend, they'll have to stop No. 12-ranked College of Idaho's 17-game CCC winning streak that dates back to 2022. The Yotes improved to 4-0 in conference play with a 3-0 victory on Friday at Oregon Tech. Kickoff on Saturday is scheduled for noon.
