COMPLETE TOURNAMENT RESULTS
NAPERVILLE, Ill. – Carolina Moreno, Southern Oregon's top-ranked senior 131-pounder, found no one who could slow her down Sunday in one of the country's biggest collegiate tournaments.
At the North Central Open, Moreno stretched her winning streak to 54 matches and won her third title of the young season by defeating the No. 2-ranked NCAA wrestler at her weight in the final. Kat Hingano placed fourth at 207 pounds for the Raiders, Malia Welch won the 124 consolation championship, and Sabrina Sifuentez was third in the 145 'B' bracket.
Of the 13 wrestlers who competed for SOU, 10 contributed at least one victory. The Raiders were sixth out of 38 teams that registered points in the standings, accumulating 87. North Central (Ill.), ranked No. 2 at the NCAA level, won with 251 points and top-ranked University of Iowa was second with 148 ½.
Moreno, the three-time NAIA champion, improved to 13-0 on the season. She reached the 131 final with a pin and two technical-fall shutouts, and once there she held off North Central's No. 2 Sara Sterner in a 12-6 decision.
Hingano, the freshman who has already won two tournament championships at 207, recorded two pins before losing in the quarterfinals, then had two more before going down in the third-place match.
Welch was eliminated from place-winning with a first-round loss in the 124 bracket. After that, though, she checked off five consecutive consolation victories, getting two with bonus points. She was a 7-2 winner over Indiana Tech's Rose Kaplan in the consolation final.
Sifuentez went 5-1 during her impressive day, opening with a pin, a technical fall and a decision to reach the semifinals. In the third-place match she scored a 10-0 tech against Keaton Hood of Albion (Mich.).
The Raiders, ranked No. 12 in this week's NAIA Top 20, will break until Linfield's Mat Cat Invitational on Jan. 5. They compete at the NWCA National Duals on Jan. 10-11.
