Raiders escape College of Idaho with conference-opening win

CALDWELL, Idaho — No. 4-ranked Southern Oregon earned a 65-55 win at College of Idaho on Friday evening, marking the start of the Cascade Conference season for both teams at the J.A. Albertson Activities Center.

Senior forward Morgan Baird rejoined the Raiders after missing the team's last two contests and lifted the offense with 18 points, shooting 7-of-13 from the field and a perfect 4-of-4 from the stripe. Senior wing Emma Schmerbach complemented Baird's game with 13 points, eight rebounds and no turnovers, and senior forward Clara Robbins shined defensively with six rebounds, two blocks and two steals in addition to six points.

SOU (7-0 overall) found itself tied 15-15 through the first after an 11-point quarter from C of I's Kylie Waltermeyer but ended the half up six.

Early in the fourth, the Yotes (2-4) cut the deficit to three with a six-point run sparked by Anna Mooney, who finished the game with 11 points. Baird and Schmerbach answered, helping the Raiders go back up by eight by the 3:28 mark and forcing the Yotes to play the foul game.

Robbins helped seal the deal down the stretch by blocking a Mooney layup, grabbing a steal, and securing an offensive board and putback within the final minutes of play.

The Raiders struggled shooting from 3-point range, making just 2-of-13 from behind the arc, but limited the Yotes to a 34% field-goal clip.

SOU has won its last six games against C of I.

The Raiders tip off at 3 p.m. Saturday at Eastern Oregon (4-2), which lost its CCC opener 69-51 to Oregon Tech.
