TOURNAMENT CENTRAL

LA GRANDE – With six wrestlers through to the semifinals and four more who staved off elimination in their consolation brackets, No. 14 Southern Oregon remains in the mix halfway through the Cascade Conference Championships presented by U.S. Bank after Friday's action at Quinn Coliseum.

Individual title hopes are still alive for No. 18-ranked Vonn Fenn at 125 pounds, No. 10 Simon Graeber at 133, No. 1 Evan Potter and Anthony Perez at 141, No. 11 Aaron Gandara at 157, and No. 8 Alex Hernandez at 174.

As for the team title, the field has ground to make up on defending champion Menlo (Calif.). The No. 3-ranked Oaks have seven in the semifinals and are in first place with 74 points, padding their score with 10 wins by fall. No. 4 Providence (Mont.) is second with 65, No. 11 Embry-Riddle (Ariz.) is third with 57 ½, and the Raiders are a point back in fourth – the same spot they were in after Day 1 last year before finishing second.

Travis Thorpe (149), Dylan Straley (157), Adrian Chavez-Morales (184) and No. 13 Andrew Herrera (197) are the others still alive for the Raiders, who advanced all but two of their 12 wrestlers in the tournament.

SOU's lightweights enjoyed quick, clean days. Fenn didn't surrender a point at 125, opening with a first-round pin and getting Vanguard (Calif.)'s Dominic De'altonago, 7-0, in the quarterfinals. Graeber only needed one win to reach the 133 semis, topping Vanguard's Julian Leon by 4-1 decision, and is the highest remaining seed in the championship bracket. Perez and the top-ranked Potter are on opposite sides of the 141 bracket: Perez opened with a sudden-victory upset of Embry-Riddle (Ariz.)'s No. 20 Christian Lopez and followed with a major decision in the quarterfinals, and Potter outscored his two opponents 33-11 combined.

Gandara – seeded No. 3 in the 157 bracket and attempting to become SOU's first three-time CCC champion – shut out back-to-back unranked opponents. Hernandez was dominant at 174, starting with a technical fall and finishing with a 15-1 major decision over Corban's No. 15 Tyson Stover.

Chavez-Morales was responsible for SOU's biggest upset of the day in consolation action, advancing to Day 2 with a second-round pin of MSU-Northern's No. 7 Austin Vanek.

Saturday's wrestling begins at 10 a.m. The finals are slated for a 5 p.m. start.
