ASHLAND – Eleven days after taking a 19-point loss on Corban's home court, the Southern Oregon men's basketball team dished out some emphatic payback Wednesday night in the quarterfinal round of the Cascade Conference Championships presented by U.S. Bank at Lithia Motors Pavilion.
The No. 4-seeded Raiders held the No. 5-seeded Warriors to 23 points in the first half and hit 10-of-16 3-point attempts in the second, running away with an 88-60 victory that put them in the semifinals for the sixth consecutive season. It was their most lopsided postseason win since 1988.
Casson Rouse hit 5-of-7 from 3 to score 19,
Cole McAninch shot 3-of-4 downtown with 17 points and four assists, and
Dominic McGarvey was 6-of-7 from the field with 15 points and nine rebounds. The Raiders (17-12 overall) shot 38 percent in their 80-61 loss Feb. 17 in Salem; they were at 57 percent this time around and 14-of-27 beyond the arc collectively.
Their reward is another date Saturday at top-seeded College of Idaho, the No. 3-ranked defending NAIA champion. The Yotes have won 22 consecutive games since their Dec. 1 loss at SOU – 12 of them by 30-plus points – and beat Northwest (Wash.) 100-63 in their quarterfinal.
The Warriors wrapped up their season at 17-11. They trimmed SOU's 10-point halftime lead to 35-28 two minutes into the second half before SOU hit seven of its next nine 3-point attempts during a 38-15 run that spanned just 10 minutes. McAninch scored 12 of his points throughout the push.
Ethan Blythe (3 assists, 3 steals) and
Jordan Veening (7 rebounds) were the fourth and fifth Raiders in double figures with 10 points each.
Brett Hollins chimed in with another well-rounded effort, totaling nine points, five assists, four rebounds and two steals. He turned his last steal into a fast-break dunk that put the Raiders up 23 points midway through the second half.
The Warriors were slow to start offensively, sitting on 16 points through the first 17 minutes of the contest. They got 15 points from Collin Warmouth, 13 points and eight boards from Jay Wilson, and four 3-points from Reece Van Lierop.
The Raiders have won four consecutive playoff games against Corban over the last eight years. They completed their home schedule with an 11-3 record.
