TOURNAMENT CENTRAL
PARK CITY, Kan. –
Evan Potter advanced to the 141-pound quarterfinals and Southern Oregon pushed four more wrestlers through to the second of three days at the NAIA Championships on Thursday at Hartman Arena.
Potter, the top seed in his bracket, survived a first-round scare against Domenico DiGena of Reinhardt (Ga.), prevailing by 3-2 decision with a third-period escape. Vying for his third All-America honor, the junior cruised through the second round with a 6-0 win over No. 16 seed Thomas Williams of St. Thomas (Fla.) to bring his season record to 25-1. He'll meet the No. 9 seed, Life (Ga.)'s Bret Minor, in Friday's quarterfinal round.
The Raiders finished the day tied for 14
th place in the team standings. They still have
Aaron Gandara (157 pounds),
Dylan Straley (157),
Alex Hernandez (174) and
Andrew Herrera alive in their respective consolation brackets.
Gandara, a No. 11 seed, and Hernandez, a No. 9 seed, both won their first-round matches and picked up consolation victories after stumbling in the second round. Straley and Herrera, both unseeded, had to upset No. 10 seeds to keep their seasons alive. Straley took his first consolation match by major decision and then outlasted Providence (Mont.)'s Bridger Hall, 14-11. Herrera took a 4-2 decision from Ryker Blackburn of Saint Mary (Kan.).
Friday's first session begins at 9 a.m. PST, and the second will go through the championship bracket semifinals and the consolation All-America rounds. The finals and consolation placement matches are set for Saturday.
