ASHLAND –
Hannah Clavelle and
Piper Love provided the pop in Game 1 and No. 10-ranked Southern Oregon took advantage of 12 free passes in Game 2 to secure 12-3 and 8-4 wins against Providence (Mont.) on Thursday at University Field.
Clavelle and Love both homered, had three hits and drove in three runs during the opener, which starting pitcher
Katie Machado completed for her 10th win of the season. The Raiders registered just four hits but took eight walks and were plunked by four pitches in the nightcap, where four unearned runs were the difference.
They improved to 19-8 overall and 8-3 in the Cascade Conference going into another doubleheader starting at 11 a.m. Saturday against the Argos (7-10, 5-6).
Love's second homer of the season, an opposite-field shot, tied Game 1 at 2-2 in the third inning, where
Sarah Kerling's bases-loaded walk later put the Raiders in front for good. Love added an RBI single in the fourth and another during SOU's four-run seventh, and Clavelle yanked her solo shot over the left-field fence in the fifth.
Hailey Seva doubled twice with two runs and an RBI and
Faith Moultrie went 3-for-4 with two runs and two RBIs in the contest.
Jordan Henderson added an RBI double and Kerling scored twice.
Katie Fodge earned the Game 2 victory by pitching 1 2/3 innings of scoreless relief. Machado – who came back with the bases loaded and one out in an 8-4 game in the fifth – got the final eight outs to bank her second save.
The Raiders trailed 4-1 early but went ahead with a seven-run fourth inning, where they brought 12 batters to the plate but only needed two hits to do their damage.
Clavelle reached base three times and had a run-scoring single. Kerling walked twice with an RBI and a run scored.
The Argos tallied 12 hits but left 15 runners on base. Gracie Fleming went 3-for-4 with two RBIs.
