Injury foils SOU's upset try

CALDWELL, Idaho – Southern Oregon's promising upset bid against No. 2-ranked Corban took an unfortunate turn Saturday when a forfeit due to injury gave the Warriors the win they needed to prevail 3-2 at the C of I Beach Volleyball Courts.

The Raiders got match wins from their No. 4 pair, Skyy Nihipali-Botelho and Annie Hite, and their No. 5 pair, Natalie Perez and Natasha Perez. They were on the verge of getting another from their No. 2 duo, Grace Gulbrandsen and Taylor Jackson, when an injury to Jackson prevented her from continuing. They'd won the first set and led 13-4 in the second at the time it occurred.

A win would have left the Raiders (7-2 overall, 6-2 Cascade Conference) tied with Corban atop the CCC standings. They've dropped both of their matchups against the Warriors by 3-2 scores.

"It was an emotional dual and I'm really proud of the way we battled," SOU coach Paul Elliott said. "But all we're really thinking about right now is TJ and how she's doing."

The Perez sisters swept their match, while Hite and Nihipali-Botelho had to come back and win a tiebreaker. Both pairs remained the only ones in the circuit with perfect records, improving to 9-0.

The second-place Raiders have four duals next week, which is the last of the regular season. They play Bushnell on Thursday and Northwest (Wash.) on Friday in Eugene, then travel Saturday to Salem to face Bushnell and Corban.
