Raiders open home slate with 3-1, 8-0 wins against Carroll

ASHLAND Katie Machado and Mayze Menefee tossed back-to-back quality complete games and Southern Oregon went to 5-0 in the Cascade Conference by defeating Carroll (Mont.) 3-1 and 8-0 in its home openers Friday at University Field.

Machado upped her record to 8-1 by going all seven in the opener, striking out three with one walk in a seven-hitter. Menefee improved to 6-3 by shutting the Saints out in the six-inning Game 2, at one point retiring 10 consecutive batters. She struck out six, walked one and allowed four hits.

In Game 1, Jordan Henderson went 2-for-3 with a run scored and drove in the go-ahead run with a first-inning single. Hannah Clavelle with 3-for-3 and stroked a two-RBI hit in the third, putting the Raiders (15-4 overall) up 3-0.

The Saints (3-10-1, 0-4 CCC) surrendered only one earned run in Game 2, but four errors opened the floodgates. All six of SOU's runs were unearned in the second inning, where with the bases loaded Sarah Kerling's well-placed bouncer got through the defense and took a few funny hops to the fence to give her an inside-the-park grand slam.

Faith Moultrie lined an RBI triple two batters later, and an errant throw from the outfield allowed her to come home. She later tripled again but was cut down at the plate trying to turn it into another inside-the-parker.

Lina Sanchez added a pair of hits off the bench. Her double with one out in the sixth brought home Kami Klapp to trigger the eight-run rule.

Clavelle and Moultrie led the Raiders with four hits apiece on the day.

Machado has now gone at least four innings without allowing more than two runs in 10 consecutive starts. Her ERA dipped to 1.32.

SOU and Carroll will play two more Saturday, starting at 11 a.m.
