ASHLAND – Southern Oregon's Sadie Byrd won her second straight Cascade Conference Volleyball Defensive Player of the Week Award and Alyssa Johnson was voted Women's Cross Country Runner of the Week, the CCC office announced Monday.

Byrd broke her own single-match SOU record with 14 blocks Saturday against Bushnell, leading the No. 5-ranked Raiders (10-1 overall, 4-1 CCC) to a four-set victory. The senior middle amassed 19 blocks and 15 kills on the weekend, and in the process moved up to No. 2 on the program's all-time blocks list by bringing her total to 445.

Byrd ranked third among all NAIA players last season with an average of 1.5 blocks per set. She is nearing that clip again this fall after the latest outing, averaging 1.4.

Johnson, a sophomore from Veneta, placed ninth in a 67-person field Saturday at the UC Davis Stump Invitational, where SOU was the only non-NCAA Division I or II team in attendance. Her 5,000-meter time of 17:47.7 helped the No. 11-ranked Raiders to third in the team standings.

The season-opening race came four months after Johnson placed 10th in the 5K at the NAIA Outdoor Championships as a true freshman. She also became an All-CCC performer in cross country last fall.
