PORTLAND – Multnomah forwards Noah McCord and Keilan Torkornoo put up 18 points and 13 rebounds apiece and the Lions pulled away at the free-throw line in an 83-78 defeat of Southern Oregon on Friday night at Lytle Gym.
Bryce Dyer shot 6-of-9 with team-highs of 14 points, seven rebounds and five assists for the Raiders, who fell to 8-6 overall and 3-5 in the Cascade Conference.
They shrunk what had been an 11-point second-half lead for Multnomah (11-3, 7-2) to 56-55 on
Jacob Axmaker's 3-pointer with 9:42 remaining. It was a two-point game a couple minutes later when SOU missed a potential go-ahead 3, after which the Lions went on to make nine consecutive free throws over their next four possessions.
An Alileyon Ford 3-pointer directly following that stretch gave the Lions a 73-61 advantage and momentum they never relinquished. They finished 17-of-23 from the stripe in the second half after being awarded just four attempts in the first.
Etan Collins and
Elijah Jackson both scored 13 points for the Raiders, while Axmaker and
Mason Whittaker both went for 10 off the bench.
Marje Windfield sparked the Lions with 12 points on a 4-of-5 display from 3-point range. They shot 51% from the field to overcome the 20 points that SOU got out of their 13 turnovers.
Multnomah, which is off to its best start ever in CCC play, has defeated the Raiders three years in a row in Portland.
SOU will remain in Portland for a visit to Warner Pacific at 5 p.m. Saturday before playing seven of its next nine games at home.
