CEDAR FALLS, Iowa – A dramatic first-round upset of No. 8 Indiana Tech was the peak of an afternoon that left the No. 9 Southern Oregon men's wrestling team outside of the top-eight on Friday at the NWCA-NAIA National Dual Championships.

The Raiders improved to 13-0 with a 22-18 win against Indiana Tech before taking their first two losses of the season at the UNI-Dome – 42-9 to top-ranked Grand View (Iowa) in the quarterfinals, and 24-16 to No. 11 Providence (Mont.) in their first consolation dual.

They'll face No. 4 Cumberlands (Ky.) at 9 a.m. PST Saturday before moving on to either the ninth-place dual or the 11th-place dual at 11 a.m. against Indiana Tech or No. 14 Montana State-Northern.

There were a few heroes in the opener, none greater than sophomore heavyweight Sebastian Echeverria. Back-to-back losses left the Raiders down 18-11 against Tech entering the 184-pound match, where Adrian Chavez-Morales came through with a 11-2 major decision over No. 25 Michael Durham. No. 5 Asher Ruchti added another bonus point at 197 with a 16-3 throttling of No. 19 Trevor Stuyvenberg.

It put the Raiders up 19-18 for Echeverria, who pulled off a shocker by taking down No. 6 Braydon Erb in overtime for a 5-2 clincher.

Chavez-Morales and Ruchti recorded a pin and a decision, respectively, to account for SOU's only victories against Grand View, which has won 12 of the last 13 NAIA championships.

Chavez-Morales completed his perfect day with a 3-0 decision over Providence's Abel Nava to put the Raiders up 16-15, but the Argos took the next two matches to steal the team win. Caleb Werner, ranked No. 11 at 197, upset Ruchti with a pivotal first-round pin, and No. 14 heavyweight Ethan DeRoche finished the job with an 8-4 decision over Echeverria.

Aaron Gandara, SOU's No. 4-ranked 157-pounder, helped his cause considerably by knocking off top-ranked Aden Graves in a convincing 8-0 major decision. The senior also defeated a No. 12-ranked opponent earlier in the day against Indiana Tech.

No. 11 Dylan Clark (133) and No. 1 Evan Potter (141) added top-25 wins during the Providence dual, and Potter had another against Tech.
