TOURNAMENT CENTRAL
PARK CITY, Kan. –
Vonn Fenn,
Evan Potter and
Asher Ruchti are through to the quarterfinals and four more Southern Oregon men's wrestlers advanced in consolation action on Day 1 of 3 of the NAIA Championships at Hartman Arena.
The Raiders concluded Thursday's action eighth in the team standings with 23 points, and just four outside of the top five. A year ago, when they finished 11th, they put five individuals through to Day 2 of the tournament. Their seven remaining wrestlers get to work again at 9 a.m. PST Friday.
Fenn, a sophomore seeded No. 13 in the 125-pound bracket, will be in the quarterfinals for the first time after executing SOU's biggest upset of the day. After shutting out Clemente Delgado of Graceland (Iowa) by 8-0 major decision in the first round, he notched a 4-1 overtime victory in the second against No. 4 seed Landon Smith of Embry-Riddle (Ariz.) – the same guy who defeated Fenn 7-1 in the Cascade Conference semifinals.
Potter, a senior seeded No. 3 at 141, is a win away from becoming the eighth four-time All-American in program history. Following a first-round bye, he won his only match 4-1 against Missouri Baptist's Tyler Deen.
Ruchti, the No. 8 seed at 197, also received a first-round bye before dominating the No. 9 seed, Midland (Neb.)'s Burton Brandt, by 8-1 decision. He'll face top-seeded Garavous Kouekabakilaho of Grand View (Iowa) in his quarterfinal.
Simon Graeber (133),
Aaron Gandara (157),
Adrian Chavez-Morales (184) and
Elias Corona (197) are the other Raiders still standing. Graeber, following a first-round loss to the No. 2 seed, registered a pin before taking out teammate
Dylan Clark, 12-1, in his second consolation match. Gandara, seeded No. 2, suffered an upset loss in his debut – he led 3-1 before Missouri Valley's Brayden Shelton pinned him two minutes into the first round – but recovered with a win by fall in consolation action. The No. 13-seeded Chavez-Morales sandwiched a second-round loss with a pair of pins, while the No. 14-seeded Corona won by fall in his first match, fell to the No. 3 seed in the second, and defeated Corban's Hunter James 12-6 in his third.
The No. 16-seeded Clark (133), No. 11 seed
Dylan Straley (157), and No. 16 seed
Braylin Ruchti (174) were eliminated. Straley contributed a first-round win but fell out after an unfortunate draw, losing to the Nos. 5 and 6 seeds consecutively.
Grand View has the points lead with 51, 14 ahead of second-place Southeastern (Fla.).
