CEDAR FALLS, Iowa –
Carolina Moreno became a 100-match winner as the No. 7-ranked Southern Oregon women's wrestling team settled for fourth place in the NWCA-NAIA National Dual Championships on Saturday at the UNI-Dome.
The Raiders, fresh off an upset No. 3 Cumberlands (Ky.) in Friday's quarterfinal round, dropped a 33-10 decision to No. 2 Grand View (Iowa) in the semifinals. Their third-place dual against No. 4 Providence (Mont.) ended at 22-22, coming down to a tiebreaker that swung in the Argos' favor.
Moreno, a top-ranked senior and three-time NAIA champion, aptly recorded her 100th victory – joining Sienna Ramirez as the only Raiders to ever do so – with a pin of GVU's No. 9 Cindy Zepeda in the 138-pound match as she wrestled up a weight. No. 5
Emma Baertlein (110 pounds) notched SOU's only other victory against the Vikings, outlasting No. 8 Tristan Nitta by 3-2 decision.
SOU (4-2 overall) had to erase a 21-10 deficit in the final three matches to level the score against Providence. After No. 16
Quilaztli Miguel-Lapham (16) won by 6-0 decision and No. 19
Lillian Gradillas-Flores (180) by 13-3 technical fall, No. 4
Kat Hingano (207) made it 22-22 with a second-round pin of Jasmine Adiniwin.
With the teams even in total wins and wins by fall, the tiebreaker went to total non-pin match points, where UP maintained a 45-37 advantage.
Moreno extended her winning streak to 57 matches with a 10-0 technical fall over the Argos' No. 9-ranked Paige Respicio. Baertlein also edged No. 19 Isabelle Asuncion by 2-1 decision, but those were the only wins the Raiders collected until the final three matches.
SOU is home for the first time on Jan. 19, hosting Providence, Simpson (Calif.) and Vanguard (Calif.) in a dual meetup that begins at 1 p.m.
