ASHLAND –
Elijah Jackson's 18 points and another
Bryce Dyer double-double helped Southern Oregon stay hot with an 83-69 Cascade Conference win over Eastern Oregon on Friday night at Lithia Motors Pavilion.
Winners of seven of their last eight games, the Raiders (12-6 overall, 7-5 CCC) avenged last month's three-point loss to the Mountaineers (13-6, 8-5) and led by as many as 22 points late. After keeping the CCC's top scorer, Garrett Hawkes, to 2-of-10 shooting in the first half on the way to a 31-25 edge, they flashed their offensive firepower in the second while shooting 20-of-38 with seven 3-pointers.
Jackson hit three 3s during his 7-of-11 performance. Dyer went 5-of-8 with 12 points, 10 rebounds and two steals, registering his fourth conference double-double and sixth overall this season.
Mason Whittaker added two more 3s and scored 12 with four rebounds and three assists.
EOU, which was led by Hawkes' 15 points and Malachi Afework's 13, has dropped 13 of its last 14 games on SOU's home court.
The Raiders' league-best 3-point defense was up to par, holding EOU to 6-of-21 from beyond the arc – a number that was padded by three makes in the final two minutes. So was their league-best 3-point offense, which went 11-of-27 from deep and got two more makes from
Etan Collins.
Dating back to last season, the Raiders have gone 29 consecutive games without hitting fewer triples than their opponents.
In a six-point game with 11:12 left, Whittaker drilled one of his moments before Jackson picked Logan Orchard's pocket and went coast-to-coast for a layup that put the Raiders up 51-40. The lead went down to six again two minutes later, but a pair of
Khalil Chatman buckets bookended a 6-0 response.
Up 59-49 at the 6:10 mark, the Raiders began pulling away for good thanks to back-to-back 3s from Collins and
Jack Chlumak.
Chatman and Chlumak both scored nine off the bench. Chatman also pulled down six boards, and Chlumak added three assists and three rebounds.
Gabe Reichle dropped in all eight of his points after halftime.
The Raiders got 37 total points from their reserves compared to 22 for EOU's bench.
They're now tied for fifth place in the loss column with EOU after starting the night seventh in the standings.
SOU hosts No. 5-ranked College of Idaho at 5 p.m. Saturday. The Yotes held on to first place by escaping Oregon Tech with an 82-76 win on Friday.
