Raiders' upset bid foiled by C of I

ASHLAND – Drew Wyman put up 15 points, eight rebounds, three blocks and a pair of game-sealing free throws with three seconds left as No. 5-ranked College of Idaho ducked Southern Oregon's upset bid and escaped Lithia Motors Pavilion with a 71-67 win on Saturday evening.

After trailing by 13 points in the first half, the Raiders (12-7 overall, 7-6 Cascade Conference) took a brief 3-point lead midway through the second. Wyman erased it by bouncing in a 3-pointer with 9:14 remaining, and Johnny Radford scored 10 of his 17 points the rest of the way to push the Yotes (18-2, 13-1) over the top.

The Raiders missed a 3 for the tie with 1:17 left, and on the other end Samaje Morgan got to the basket for a three-point play that made it 66-60. C of I then held on by making 5-of-6 from the free-throw line.

The result spoiled a gutsy effort by the Raiders, who had won seven of their previous eight games. Elijah Jackson scored a game-high 19 points – the senior guard averaged 18.5 and went 15-of-27 from the field on the weekend – and added eight rebounds and four assists. Bryce Dyer accumulated nine points and 15 boards, while Mason Whittaker scored 11 with three 3-pointers and Jack Chlumak added eight off the bench.

SOU hung in the game despite 39% shooting by pulling down 19 offensive rebounds that led to 20 second-chance points. The Raiders also held C of I to 38% from the field.

The Yotes, however, got to the line for 20 attempts compared to SOU's seven. They also committed just four turnovers. Samaje Morgan contributed 11 points and five assists, and Tyler Robbinett had 11 points and four blocked shots.

The Yotes, who have won four consecutive CCC regular-season titles, ended the weekend with a 2 ½ game lead atop the standings.

The Raiders visit 10th-place Northwest (Wash.) and 11th-place Evergreen (Wash.) next weekend before returning home Feb. 4 for a matchup with second-place Oregon Tech.
