ASHLAND –
Carlotta Kloppenburg-Pruitt's 100th victory didn't come as easily as a majority of the first 99, but her No. 4-ranked Southern Oregon women's basketball team found a way on the defensive end to defeat College of Idaho, 58-51, and keep its perfect record intact on Saturday at Lithia Motors Pavilion.
The Raiders improved to 19-0 overall and 13-0 in the Cascade Conference only after spotting C of I (10-9, 8-6) the first 11 points of the afternoon and an eventual 15-point advantage. In the final game of one of the hottest offensive months in team history, they survived 37% shooting – their lowest clip of the season – by blanketing the Yotes with two separate five-minute scoring droughts during the second half.
Senior forward
Morgan Baird went 6-of-9 from the field with 14 points and five rebounds, and she put the Raiders in front for good with a second-chance bucket at the 6:35 mark of the fourth. Up by four with 2:35 remaining, she took a pass inside from
Meghan McIntyre and converted a three-point play. The Raiders went 6-of-7 from the free-throw line the rest of the way to finish the job.
Kloppenburg-Pruitt's milestone win came in just her 119th game at SOU. The fourth-year coach, who has yet to miss an NAIA National Tournament, has led the Raiders to 33 consecutive regular-season victories dating back to last season. They now have a two-game lead atop the CCC standings thanks to Eastern Oregon's upset at Oregon Tech on Saturday.
The Raiders faced their second-largest deficit of the season at 22-7 after Mia Austin knocked down the Yotes' fourth 3-pointer a couple minutes into the second quarter. They made just one 3 the rest of the way as SOU turned up the defensive pressure, and shot 31% over the final three quarters of play.
A 12-5 run to close the first half got the Raiders within seven points. They held the Yotes scoreless for the first five minutes of the third and finally tied the game with 3:43 left in the quarter on
Bridgette McIntyre's transition triple.
McIntyre dropped in eight of her 13 points after halftime and shot 3-of-6 with a pair of 3s and five rebounds.
Emma Schmerbach amassed 10 points, six boards and three assists, and
Meghan McIntyre went for eight points, two blocks and two steals.
Mallory Williams sparked the Raiders off the bench, hitting a pair of 3s to keep them within striking distance during their early drought.
The Raiders have overcome double-digit deficits four times this season. They're two wins away from matching the longest winning streak in program history.
Brooke Beresford had 13 points, nine rebounds and three assists to lead the Yotes, who have been swept in three straight regular-season series by SOU.
The Raiders travel next weekend to Northwest (Wash.) and Evergreen (Wash.) before returning home Feb. 4 to face Oregon Tech.
