McKean matches SOU goals record with 5 in blowout of Argos

ASHLAND – Behind Abby McKean's record-tying performance, the streaking Southern Oregon women's soccer team put up its highest goal total in a decade with a 10-0 rout of Providence (Mont.) on Saturday afternoon at Raider Stadium's Laurel Field.

McKean, a junior forward, scored five goals to match the program's single-game benchmark established 22 years ago by Katie Emerson. Frida Vargas added a brace, Brooklyn Hayes had a goal and two assists, and Payton Puppe-Wotipka was credited with three assists.

The Raiders upped their record to 8-1-1 overall and 5-0-1 in the Cascade Conference. Now alone in second place, they positioned themselves to take a crack at first on the road next Friday against No. 5-ranked College of Idaho (7-0-0 CCC) before visiting another one of the circuit's best in third-place Eastern Oregon.

The Argos (4-5-2, 4-4-0) had only surrendered eight goals combined in their seven previous conference games.

The Raiders had them down within the first minute when Frida Vargas bent home a corner kick that went off the keeper's hands and in. Four minutes later, Hayes tallied for the fourth consecutive game and the sixth time this season to make it 2-0.

That's when McKean got to work, scoring first in the 15th minute on a breakaway executed by Puppe-Wotipka and Hayes. Vargas tacked on her second goal in the 20th, and McKean was assisted by Puppe-Wotipka and Emily Hyde in the 25th before Isabella Amoth scored to make it 6-0 by halftime.

McKean scored three of her goals in the second half and Hyde contributed the other. Mia Ammons, Tori Lasch and Sierra Sam Fong had assists.

McKean brought her season goals total to seven. She'd never previously scored more than one in the same game.

Puppe-Wotipka, a junior defender, became the sixth player in team history with a three-assist performance. Vargas joined that list last month.

The Raiders have outscored opponents 24-3 during their six-game CCC unbeaten streak and 20-1 during their four-game winning streak. The shutout was their third in a row, and the three keepers who saw action didn't need to make a single save to complete it.
