SOU ends No. 4 Yotes' CCC win streak at 32 with road upset

CALDWELL, Idaho – Armed with the knowledge that the Cascade Conference women's soccer championship goes through No. 4-ranked College of Idaho, Southern Oregon stopped by Simplot Stadium and pulled off a monumental heist on Friday afternoon.

The Raiders made C of I the highest-ranked victim in program history by claiming a 3-2 decision in a battle of the circuit's top teams. They ended the Yotes' CCC winning streak, which dated back to 2022, at 32 games.

After surrendering the first goal in the 20th minute, the Raiders came up with two in quick succession from Frida Vargas and Tori Lasch before halftime. They went up 3-1 in the 72nd minute when Sierra Sam Fong lashed a penalty kick into the net.

With five regular-season games remaining, SOU (9-1-1 overall, 6-0-1 CCC) owns the top CCC winning percentage (.929) on the table and is just two points back of the Yotes (10-2-0, 7-1-0) with a game in hand.

"It's hard to put into words how proud I am of the team for how hard they battled," said SOU coach Jenni Rosenberg, whose teams were winless in their last eight matchups with the Yotes. "They were laser-focused on what we had to do and followed through."

The Yotes had only one goal to show for their early run-of-play dominance, striking first on an Abbi Roubidoux shot set up by Gianna Yslava's cross. SOU keeper Brittany Standley kept them at bay from that point with a career-high eight saves, buying her side time to settle in.

Vargas equalized in the 42nd minute by putting in a rebound in the box. Two minutes later, Lasch went one-on-one around her defender from the left side and struck a shot from up close that went off of keeper Alivia Brenchley's hands and in.

While the Raiders frustrated C of I with in an effective packed-in defense out of halftime, they also took advantage of one of their few opportunities in the 72nd as the Yotes were whistled for a foul on the outskirts of the box. Sam Fong stepped up to the penalty area for the ensuing PK and banked her first career goal. Natasja Davis halved the lead with seven minutes left for the Yotes, but they didn't generate another shot.

It had been 77 games since the Yotes last surrendered three goals. Entering the contest, they'd outscored opponents 120-11 combined in conference games over the past three seasons.

SOU has now defeated three top-10 teams in program history. The last time the Raiders took down a ranked opponent was Aug. 24, 2023, when the upended No. 9 Embry-Riddle (Ariz.) in a neutral-site game on C of I's home field.

They'll be tested again Saturday at Eastern Oregon, which improved to 5-2 in the CCC by defeating Oregon Tech on Friday. Kickoff is scheduled for 4 p.m.

"This road trip is a battle and we know we can't relax against a really good EOU team," Rosenberg said. "We'll be ready."
