ASHLAND – Following a string of recent ho-hum blowouts at home, the Southern Oregon women's soccer team left Raider Stadium buzzing in its final regular-season appearance on Laurel Field with Saturday's dramatic 1-0 defeat of Bushnell.
From the left side in the 85th minute,
Frida Vargas dribbled past her defender toward the end line and passed back in the box to
Abby McKean, whose straight-on shot deflected off of a defender and into the net for the lone goal.
The duo's heroics made the Raiders 11-2-1 overall and 8-1-1 in the Cascade Conference, a day after they hit the 10-win mark faster than any team in program history. They'll enter the final week of the regular season – which will take them to 10th-place Warner Pacific and last-place Walla Walla (Wash.) – in sole possession of second place.
The Raiders ended their CCC home slate with a 5-0-1 record. Prior to Saturday, they'd outscored opponents 26-3 combined in those games.
Slick conditions, the result of heavy rainfall that came and went throughout the game, contributing to their early offensive issues. So did a stingy Bushnell team (7-4-3, 6-3-1) that had only given up two goals in its six previous games.
SOU's
Emily Hyde hit the crossbar with a strike in the first half, Vargas did the same on a free kick in the second, and Beacons keeper Ana Augusto kept the Raiders quiet with four impressive saves.
Finally, they broke through thanks McKean, who brought her goal count to eight, and Vargas, who notched her eighth assist. Vargas shot to the No. 3 spot on the all-time SOU single-season assists list and stands in the same spot on the career list with 15.
Goalkeeper
Brittany Standley continued her stellar season with three saves in the team's eighth shutout.
