LA GRANDE –
Isaac Hampton's upset of the No. 4-ranked individual in his weight class was only the beginning of a head-turning performance by the No. 6 Southern Oregon men's wrestling team in its dual opener, a 37-7 hammering of No. 20 Eastern Oregon on Friday night at EOU Field House.
The Raiders retained possession of the Wagon Tire rivalry trophy by winning eight of the first nine matches, including six with bonus points in their fifth consecutive defeat of the Mountaineers.
Hampton's, at 125 pounds, was the first and most consequential with regard to national pecking order. Filling in for injured and No. 2-ranked
Vonn Fenn, the unranked sophomore – who won three state titles at Newberg High and spent his freshman season at Navy – punished No. 4 Jackson Eylar in a 19-1 technical fall that was over less than a minute into the second round.
The No. 8-ranked
Adrian Chavez-Morales (184 pounds) and No. 3
Asher Ruchti (197) punctuated the run with consecutive first-round pins that put the finishing touches on SOU's point total.
No. 20
Avant Stepherson (157) and
Jackson Potts (174) joined Hampton with tech falls. No. 11
Kolton Malone (149) won by major decision, while No. 18
Dylan Clark (133) and
Cole Zoller (165) added decisions.
The Mountaineers (1-1) got their only wins from Daniel Guerrero (141) by major decision and No. 3 Nicolas Rodriguez (285) by tight 4-2 decision against
Sebastian Echeverria.
Over three matchups between the teams since the start of last season, SOU has outscored EOU 93-27 combined.
The Raiders will compete in an exhibition dual on Saturday, visiting Clackamas C.C. at 5 p.m.
