ASHLAND –
Gio Evanson filled the box score in his first career double-double and Southern Oregon jumped on Northwest (Wash.) early in a 79-66 Cascade Conference-opening win Friday night at Lithia Motors Pavilion.
Evanson, a 6-foot-6 sophomore guard, put up 18 points, 10 rebounds, four assists, three steals and two blocked shots for the Raiders, shooting 9-of-16 while doing most of his work off the drive. He scored 12 in the second half after SOU brought a 41-17 lead into the break by keeping the Eagles at 19% from the field in the first.
Bryce Dyer contributed 12 points, six rebounds, four assists and two steals.
Elijah Jackson scored 10 and freshman reserve
Jace Anderson had career-highs of 10 points and nine boards.
The game was the Raiders' first at home after seven on the road in non-conference play. The win made them 3-5 overall, while Northwest fell to 2-5.
Dyer and Jackson hit 3-pointers to key a game-opening 16-2 run in which the Eagles converted one bucket over nine-plus minutes. Sixteen straight misses from 3 prevented them from recovering; they hit all 10 of their triples in the second half as Christian Watkins (20 points) and Logan Stempniak (16 points, 11 rebounds) heated up with the game out of reach.
SOU finished at 46% from the field, getting more good work from forwards
Luke Wagstaff (8 points, 5 rebounds) and
Joe Juhala (8 points, 3 rebounds).
Brady Rice chipped in six points, helping the Raiders' bench outscore Northwest's 26-14.
The Raiders have won 10 consecutive matchups against the Eagles, who were coming off a one-point loss at NCAA Division II squad Alaska Anchorage in their previous road trip.
The night marked the start of SOU's five-game homestand, which continues at 5 p.m. Saturday against Evergreen (Wash.).
