ASHLAND – The brackets have been finalized for the NAIA Men's Wrestling Championships, where Southern Oregon's representatives get to work Thursday morning at Hartman Arena in Park City, Kan.
The Raiders raised expectations by winning their first Cascade Conference championship in seven years, finishing on top of a field that included No. 5-ranked Providence (Mont.) and No. 6 Embry-Riddle (Ariz.). They qualified 10 individuals in the process, giving them their largest representation at the national meet in 10 years.
They were ranked No. 10 in last month's final NAIA poll and, after placing 11th in the team standings last season, are seeking their first top-10 finish since 2017. Leading their contingent are three-time All-American
Evan Potter, the No. 3 seed at 141 pounds, and four-time qualifier and one-time All-American
Aaron Gandara, the No. 2 seed at 157.
Nine of SOU's entries have top-16 seeds. Five of them are appearing at the tournament for the first time, including three freshmen in the mix.
As of last year, the tournament has a three-day, six-session form. Action begins at 9 a.m. PST every morning: They'll get through the first two rounds on Thursday, the championship semifinals and consolation quarterfinals on Friday, and the placement rounds and finals on Saturday. The finals will begin at 5 p.m. PST.
Top-ranked Grand View (Iowa) will attempt to win its 13th title in 14 years.
