Top-ranked Raiders quiet Carroll's bats

HELENA, Mont. – Hot-hitting Carroll (Mont.) met its match in top-ranked Southern Oregon's pitching staff Friday afternoon at Nelson Stadium.

Ayla Davies and Mayze Menefee spun back-to-back complete games without yielding an earned run in the Raiders' 6-1 and 7-0 Cascade Conference wins over the Saints, which made them 19-1 overall and 5-0 in the CCC.

Faith Moultrie went 4-for-4 and Sarah Kerling was 3-for-3 in the opener, driving in two runs each. Ari Williams doubled and tripled with two runs scored and an RBI in Game 2, where the Raiders broke out for a season-high six extra-base hits.

The Saints (5-9, 2-3) – who last week totaled 26 runs while taking two of three CCC games from No. 24 College of Idaho – struck out eight times and mustered four hits against Davies, who improved to 12-1 and lowered her ERA to 0.80. They got their only run courtesy of a two-out throwing error in the sixth inning.

Menefee went to 4-0 in the circle with the third seven-inning shutout of her career. The senior worked around five hits and four walks, leaving Saints stranded on base in six different frames. She struck out three and induced 10 groundouts, including a double-play ball.

SOU catcher Piper Love contributed three run-scoring hits on the day. The first was a single that drove in two and gave the Raiders a 3-0 lead in the third inning of Game 1. They went on to score three more in the sixth and had 13 hits in the contest.

Love's RBI single sparked a three-run second inning in Game 2, where Brooke Nordahl followed with a run-scoring triple and Kerling brought home one more with an infield hit. Love and Williams both lined RBI doubles in the third, putting SOU up 5-0.

Vanessa Lang scored four runs on the afternoon. Moultrie finished up 5-for-7.

The Raiders and Saints play two more starting at 10 a.m. PST Saturday.
